Description
SIOCHRA THE SNOW FAERIE.
Originally this story of Siochra the Snow Faerie was intended by me as the subject of a children’s tale of magic and myth. It was based on a story my mom told me when I was a little nipper, growing up in north Dublin, Ireland.
According to this rather eccentric Clare woman who was my mom, the glitter in the frost shimmering under a street light as we walked home in the dark was a sign of the presence of the Snow Faerie who created these frost shines as her way of showing us she was ever present and protective.
I expanded the tale to include a beautiful young warrior who joins forces with her to take on the Storm Giant, a careless god who dispenses frost and wild winds to deter all from approaching his dark realm but nothing deters Siochra and her lover.
The inset in the painting refers to the appearance of the Storm God and his warning to all that none must dare enter his realm.
Maybe one day I will actually finish the story to go with the painting which is one of the most detailed from that period of my life.
This painting of Siochra the beautiful Snow Faerie shows her wistfully gazing over her wintery realm with her two familiars, the owls, as she awaits the return of her lover from the dark lands of the Storm God.
