The Morrigan Hand-Enhanced Print
Designed by Jim FitzPatrick, Hand-Enhanced by Suzanne FitzPatrick
My first print collaboration with my daughter Suzanne and what a beauty it is!
The Morrigan hand-enhanced print has been in the works for years and finally, here it is! I painted this artwork for my book the Silver Arm and made it into a print a few years ago, since then it has been one of my most popular to date as is the Silk Scarf of the same image. The gold highlights were first designed and drawn out by me then given to Suzanne to apply to the rest of this very limited edition of 25.
The pictures were taken by Suzanne of her work on the first of the edition.
Each print is signed and embossed by Jim FitzPatrick and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The Story
I have always been a little fixated on The Morrigán, the beautiful seductress, the triple war-goddess, shapeshifter and harbinger of doom. The same Morrigán who, in the guise of a black crow, drank the blood of the hero CúChulainn as he died slowly from his battle wounds tied to a stone pillar to hold him upright.
‘High up in my eyrie, I the sea-eagle Tuan, saw a huge raven plummet down onto the tent of Nuada. As it alighted on a tightly drawn hawser it spread out its wings, silver-blue in the moonlight, and I knew it for what it was. I watched it turn into a woman, it’s pale nakedness shrouded by dark hair. It was Morrigan, the crow of battle, also beautiful war-witch, who had come to answer the anguished call of Nuada. As she entered Nuada’s tent my heart ached, for I remembered a time when I too was king and received pleasure and comfort from the same dark-haired woman who was my queen, but now lost to me forever.’
