Description

The Harp That Once… A Watercolor Poem by Jim FitzPatrick

This artwork captures the Irish love for music, the unique Irish voice, and my own personal love of music and poetry.

Early Inspirations

As a kid I was brought up on the poetry of Thomas Moore through the voice of John McCormack on both vinyl record and Irish Radio, I heard these poems so many times I can still remember many of the verses to this day.

Looking back at my old Poster Poems from the late 60s and early 70s I wanted to create something lyrical that spoke to the rich musical traditions of Ireland. I and the Irish people’s love for music and the creation of unique music is something I wanted to evoke and the Harp is the perfect instrument both beautiful to listen to but also magically beautiful in shape and design. I based this harp on the Brian Born Harp in Trinity College.

Artwork details

The harpist artwork was part of a piece from the 80s that never got properly used and is an artwork I’ve always wanted to do more with.
The verse of poetry is from The Harp That Once Through Tara’s Halls by Thomas Moore.

I first put the artwork and verse together in Photoshop to make the line art. I print the line out on watercolor paper and then enjoy the fun bit of actually painting the piece in watercolor.

Once dried I sign, number, and emboss each piece.

Each watercolor will be unique. I can never do the same thing twice so no doubt, like you can see the slight changes in the colors of the A4 to the A3, you will get slight artistic variations as I am human and not a machine, yet!

I turn 80 at the end of the year and as you can imagine I am doing less and less of the business with my son Redmond doing the prints and new portfolios and my daughter Suzanne doing many of the hand-enhanced prints.

There is a dramatic price difference between the two sizes and the reason is simple, the larger A3 reflects the real value, but I wanted to make something possible for many more people to get.

This is something I did with my original portfolios in the 70s. I allowed people to pay with a deposit and hold onto the limited edition number for them. Now this is a simple option on this page.
