Resist Repression Original Vintage Silkscreen Print
RESIST REPRESSION. Silkscreen print.
This print is part of the Museum of Northern Ireland Collection.
There are just 7 of these rare posters left for sale in good to very good condition.
This was, as can be imagined, a very controversial and radical poster designed to shock and draw attention to the brutal and thuggish behaviour of the British army, the RUC police force and the local Protestant ‘B Specials’ in their treatment of so many innocent Catholics and Nationalists in Northern Ireland during what we euphemistically refer to as ‘The Troubles.
Their appalling behavior facilitated the rise of the Provisional IRA when the Nationalist community was left undefended by the state in the face of persecution, pogroms and ethnic cleansing.
It even won a few graphic awards including an ICAD award for design and art in Dublin in 1972.
It’s a real killer of a poster and a much sought-after vintage piece which reflects my own beliefs and feelings of revulsion at this sectarian and one-sided oppression.
It was designed also as support for my friends and comrades in the leftist Republican Clubs, who despised the division of the workers into sectarian Protestant and Catholic warring factions.
I used this poster to highlight their four central demands, the most important being the demand for a democratic, socialist republic. We’re still waiting. Don’t hold your breath.
