MIDIR AND ETAIN FICHELL GAME
The tale of the love of Étain for Midir, a god of the Tuatha Dé Danann is known as ‘The Wooing of Étain’ and features an early Irish version of a chess game, The Fichell, and tells the story of how the queen of Tara was won from her husband by a strange, unearthly warrior named Midir.
Midir who challenged the king to a game of Fichell beat him after hours of the contest, and thus won the hand of the beautiful Étain.
