Description
You Know This Cover
You’ve looked at this artwork more times than you can count. On vinyl, on CD, on a bedroom wall, on a t-shirt. You’ve traced the lines of it with your eyes — the Overlord towering over everything, the four figures breaking out, that unmistakable energy that made it feel more like a comic book splash page than an album sleeve.
That wasn’t an accident. Philip Lynott showed Jim FitzPatrick a copy of Fantastic Four #77 — a Jack Kirby masterpiece — and told him that was the energy the cover needed. Phil insisted the Overlord, not himself, should be the centrepiece. Jim drew the four band members with a Rotring Rapidograph, then took a blade and etched directly into the dried ink to carve in shadow and detail. The fingernails were cut in individually. It was hand-drawn at a level of precision that nobody attempts anymore.
Fifty years later, Jim has gone back to the original and remastered it. The 15-inch image is larger than the 12-inch album cover and printed on Hahnemühle Metallic Rag — a heavy, textured fine art paper with a metallic finish that brings out depth and detail the original sleeve could never show. You think you know every inch of this cover. You don’t. Not like this.
