Description
GODS AND FIGHTING MEN.
This painting was commissioned by Colin Smythe, later agent for one Terry Pratchett, for a series of three book reprints. This was the cover for ‘Gods and Fighting Men’, by Lady Gregory.
I had a great assistant, artist Eamonn Robbins, working with me for the three covers. I’m a huge admirer of Lady Gregory so this was fun and well worth working on.
There are three works in this set
The second of a trilogy of covers for publisher Colin Smythe, who went on to become the literary agent for fantasy author Terry Pratchett. This painting depicts the dying moments of the boy warrior Cu Chulainn, the greatest of all the heroes of the ancient Irish ‘Táin’ saga, as he makes one final stand against his enemies while tied upright to a huge pillar. It was used as a cover for the book of the same name by Lady Gregory.
The final cover in the trilogy of covers for publisher Colin Smythe, the book titled ‘The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries’ by W.Y Evans Wentz. The great interest in fairies in the early part of the 20th century was part of a wider interest in spiritualism and this book explores this connection in Ireland and elsewhere.
