Description
THE VOYAGE OF BRENDAN. THE CRYSTAL COLUMNS.
The Voyage of Saint Brendan tells of the voyage to the New World, past gigantic ice floes and various real and unreal obstacles, of Irish Saint Brendan and his followers. Author Tim Severin replicated this epic voyage in ‘The Brendan Voyage’ for National Geographic and proved that Brendan and his monks could have made it all the way to the New World and back in their leather-skinned wooden craft.
In this painting I have tried to convey the scale of the ice pillars to the puny craft that survived the terrors of the North Atlantic and made landfall probably in the New England or Newfoundland area though, for myself, I believe they landed in the Yutacán Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico.
